Yes, I just noticed this last week at the Houston Marriott Westchase! I cringed when I saw the switches and plugs, and thought I was just being too picky - but it really looked out of place with the modern look they were going for in the remodel.

To the OP's question - I almost always use the iron, and usually plug it in at the plugs which are at the base of lamps on either the desk or nightstand.
