I share in the frustration of the OP and will go one step further...

I have googled this with no success... why do we have to turn on 17 individual lamps to get enough light in the room to see anything? Is there some building code for hotels that prevent a couple of overhead lights on one wall switch? I get the extra lamps etc, but would be nice to have overhead lights similar to a home.
