I've done this, got a €250 upgrade offer at OLCI for a 10-hour TA flight on a 747-400. Took it without hesitation.
My colleagues decided not to (boss pays up to economy comfort, rest is up to yourself). Senior purser thought it was funny and relayed to them that I was very comfy on the upper deck at mid-flight while serving them a biz-class drink from me ;-)
Another I remember was on a DL domestic flight that I paid on an upgrade for.
10 year old boy walks by fully bug-eyed and goes to his dad: "Woooooow those seats look comfy..", I replied with a "Save up them miles kid, you can sit in these as well then"
