My friend who is EXP and flies LAX MIA multiple times a year has never missed an upgrade, regardless of frequency.
And even then, the roundtrip purchased F fare is routinely $1000, and I've never seen it for more than $1800, REFUNDABLE. When it's that cheap people just buy it.
