I am going to be spending a long weekend in Costa Mesa this fall to attend a concert series. My two hotel options are a Jr Suite with terrace at Avenue of the Arts or an Executive Room at the Westin. With the rates being comparable, I'd agree that the Westin is slightly more convenient for walking over to South Coast Plaza and other nearby restaurants. That being said, the 2 hotels are maybe a 5-10 min walk apart from each other, so we're really splitting hairs a bit. If you like a little walk, the distance isn't a big deal at all.
I think the Westin is a little bit nicer and with more reliably nice and clean, modern rooms, while the Ave of the Arts is a little more boutique with a bit more funky/eclectic design in its rooms. Maybe that can help.
Both hotels are pretty good, actually. You can't go wrong IMO.
