Stuff happens. Mostly it doesn't, and when it does it is rarely a big deal. As long as you know what you are doing, walking in the African bush is very safe. Humans have been doing it for millennia, without guns for most of that time, and the vast majority have survived the experience.

I've been charged by lions several times, elephants more often, attacked by a leopard, and two friends have had their vehicles rolled by elephants. We are all still alive.

Never had a serious run-in with a hippo, though. At least not on land. Canoeing on the Zambezi is another story.
