I can say from experience you can show a pretty huge difference between taxable income or adjusted gross income and the income you list on your application and still be fine, but at first I had the same concern you did. I was happy when they stopped trying to get our tax return and instead asked us to send in W-2s since those show the full amount you made rather than the lower number that hits your tax return.
