plan B was executed as we were without a vehicle for 24 hours. Used public transport and it is great in Vancouver.

If it's an inoperable vehicle and it's their fault, they will (or should) move heaven and earth to get you a replacement vehicle, and you're well within your rights to demand just about anything that helps you to complete your trip with as minimal a disruption as possible. That includes replacement vehicles from other locations or other companies, towing (and back-hauling a good car to you), reimbursement for other forms of transportation, etc. (you may not actually get all of that-- without a fight, at least--but you're within your rights to demand it).
If it's your fault, though, all bets are off. Whether it's damage (whether your fault or a third party's) or because you lost the keys or whatever, they are under no obligation to do anything.
