So, because you can only upgrade 1 class on a flight, does it make sense to book economy on an AA (BA partner) flight, for £284 each way, then try and use my Avios to upgrade to Business class (as there is only 2 classes on these flights).

LHR-JFK: BA1593
JFK-LHR: BA1515

Or should I book the outbound flight as a 1-way for £362+60k Avios = Business class

and then book a reward return flight as a separate oneway, which currently only has Economy available for £117+20k Avios

So its either 80k Avios + £479 for 1 business class + 1 economy (and possible more Avios if an upgrade opens up)

or

£564 + X Avios if an upgrade seat opens up

Do waitlists exist for these upgrades?
How likely is it that if I book regular economy, that an upgrade seat will open up?

Is there a chance that call them will give me different options than the website?

Thanks!
I think you would have to book the AA flights under their AA numbers in order to have a hope of upgrading them. But more importantly you cannot upgrade the cheapest Y fares - in fact on AA I believe you can only upgrade from full Y which appears to be £1851.

I'm confused why you aren't just going for one of the BB/AA J flights available (inc the LCY service if you fancied it), and the AA flight back, for 120k+£528. (Although if a BA flight were available inbound it would save you 10k avios as 9/9 is off-peak.)
