I'm usually asked for some ID in NZ, Canada and Argentina. I can't remember if it happenned in Europe or not. Usually just my passport number is enough, but I had a few hotels which photocopied it.
In Canada it tends to be quite inconsistent with the hotel, I remember having to show ID for the Best Western but not Sheraton or Holiday Inn.
