As said on the last message, the Citizen M is usually a bit cheaper than the Sheraton and the Hilton. Those 3 hotels are located right outside the terminal, outside the secure area. You also have the option of staying within the international / non-schengen zone of AMS at the Yotel or the Hotel Mercure. That being said, you will have to clear security and will not be able to bring luggage larger than a compliant carry-on.
I stayed at the Yotel several years ago and it was fine for a 7 hour sleep. Nothing fancy, but the most convenient option depending on your departure time.

Looks like CitizenM may be the way to go. €94 for the dates I'm looking at. Could get cheaper but would involve a shuttle bus and by the time I get baggage and the prospect of possible winter delays then getting up early the next morning I think I'll go for this.

Update: Joined CitizenM and got a few Euros off (canny Jock and all that ). Room booked and trip coming together.
