Sorry for the confusion - I was trying to explicitly show that I had a stopover in JNB (in other words in the continent/country of origin) and not merely transit there (the tool might have behaved differently in that case). All stops on the itinerary were in fact stopovers.
Have there been recent comments that AA is inventing credit-card-related rules? My understanding is that went away a year or three ago.
I do not recall any issues since the removal of the rule requiring that the fare be the higher of country of origin and country of sale.
