It will show as a
refund rather than a payment against your account and be deducted from your running spend unfortunately. YMMV of course but I doubt it.
Do they take Paypal? Thats an option which will allow you to use your amex.
And if all else fails some may suggest you book a refundable flight/hotel for next year and get the voucher anyway before cancelling the booking as and when you need to after your October deadline has passed.. Not me of course, I am much too honest to recommend that......
