The risk of birdstrikes around airports, i.e. during the critical takeoff and landing phases, can be reduced if the airport authorities implement suitable mitigation measures. Birds can be shot or poisoned, or they can be chased off with dogs or birds of prey.
The number of collisions with vehicles can also be reduced by designing, implementing and enforcing strict ground handling procedures. I recall reading years ago that Boeing strongly encouraged its 787 customers to adopt such procedures, exactly because the consequences of a collision with a composite aircraft can be so serious.
Agree, though this is an issue all airlines face. It's just bad luck that it happens with KLM more than with others.
