I stayed here. For North America, excellent property. Nicer than many Ritz-Carlton hotels with good off-season rates, courteous and well-intended staff, gorgeous design, breathtaking views, and an amazing beach.

1. Was welcomed with an arrival drink and completed check-in at the desk. Upgraded to an oceanfront suite (A building), but it was on the lower level with ZERO view. Complained. Moved to a room in the center section (E building) with a view of the ocean from across the hotel grounds and pools. Front desk tried to say this was an upgrade from my original "deluxe ocean view." Front desk eventually conceded that there was no difference between an "ocean view" and "ocean facing" room. This is a complete scam. In fact, a colleague with no status, who wasn't upgraded, was placed three numbers down from me. I was eventually moved to a new suite with a few after showing they had suite availability and reading the upgrade terms and conditions of Marriott Rewards. It should be noted that I was never thanked for my platinum status. I also had a colleague with lifetime platinum and he didn't get an upgrade. He thought he might get Griffin Club access because the property was at less than 30% occupancy. He didn't.

2. Food and beverage is excellent, but unlike past experiences at Mexican hotels the prices are in dollars and not local currency. Prices are basically U.S. prices. A little cheaper than back home, but more expensive than other comparable hotels in Latin America.

3. Staff is everywhere. Pool boys, waiters, bellmen, etc. The ratio of staff to guests is great.

4. Plenty of space even at high-season. There are so many pools and lounge chairs that you would never not find a place. Lots of towel stations. No annoying staff limiting how many towels you can grab.

5. Breakfast buffet is expensive at $30 per person. I instead opted for breakfast in the coffehouse/cafe, which was great and about $15 cheaper.

6. I had dinner at the poolside bar. The catch of the day was great, but the steaks and fish were served on sizzling cast iron hot plates. I burned myself as did my colleague. Also, we found this made the food too hot to eat. It would have been nice if the hot plate was only an option. Back home in the U.S., this would be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

7. I know enough not to drink the tap water, but I brushed my teeth with it my first morning and felt sick to my stomach for a whole day afterwards. The only other possibility was the fruit plate waiting for me in my room. I can't imagine the cooked food made me sick.

8. Internet was OK, but not reliable in some parts of the property likely due to all the concrete.

All in all, a very good property. A few tweaks and a more honest system of room categories for upgrades would be nice.
