I don't think you can make a blanket statement that you can get miles when using points and booking through third party.....
I just used Chase points for Hertz and got 0 points....
Hence why I qualified it with "for airline earning" and also said "as a general guideline"
I don't rent much. I know hotels generally don't give elite-qualifying credit for bookings on third party sites.
But for airlines it seems to be true.
