Yes, you may have saved a few dollars on your lodging, but in exchange you gave up ~4 hours per day of time - 8 hours in total - not to mention the cost of gas driving the extra 400 miles back and forth.

It sounds like you enjoyed the Alaska journey, and that's wonderful. But I'm shaking my head at the ragged planning of this trip - and hope others don't try to replicate this particular itinerary.
