As a DM, I have often managed to get out of HK airport transit area 15 -20 min after I step out of the gate. This is because I got a HKID and HK airport baggage transfer is simply one of the best. And because of this, there is NO WAY, I will trolley a 7Kg to 10 Kg bag with me for a couple of hours on every trip.

Hi another EY DM
For trips returning to HK, I
MAY consider to check the bag as I usually only needs to wait less than 5 extra minute for the bag to come out BUT that 5 minutes can means an extra 10 minutes before I can return to the office (missing an AEL train means 10 more minutes wait)
For trips to outport particularly PRC unless I've liquid with me I will definitely handcarry my bag on. For PEK and PVG the earlier you get out the more likely you can grab a taxi, particularly for night departures
p.s. I also fly EY for business... But why I always have stuff scheduled within 2 hours of STA....
