Many credit cards offer price protection, meaning that if the price drops on a consumer good within a certain period of time, they will refund the lower price. Many major retailers also offer price protection. Marriott would not do this.
So no, I don't think its inappropriate to ask for the benefit of a price drop when room rates drop 20 percent within 12 hours. And yes, I check the website because I want to know what upgrades are available. I suspect many on this forum do the same.
