My understanding and previous experience is and was correct.
Generally AC will always try to refund the monies to the original GC and will do so reasonably quick - we keep all of our used GCs and write the PNRs on the used GCs
(sometimes for a $1000 GC two trips may be booked on them).
If a trip is canceled for whatever reason we see the monies returned to our GCs usually within a few days.
