GVA often suffers in the holidays either because it is a holiday destination, (Ski and Snowboard, Lakes and Mountains). There are a lot of travelers who only fly once or twice a year to use GVA.

The other aspect it suffers from is the Swiss attitude, there is always time.. (On a le temps) There is no need to rush.. So people are not good at pre-empting what needs to be done for security.

As for passport control there is very little control over the queues, and there is very little enforcement. It is not polite to send someone to the back of the other queue when they have been waiting in the queue in front of you already. It annoys the hell out of me too... but you have to see it as part of the culture of the country you are visiting.

GVA run down... I am not sure where you are looking... I have seen a lot worse airport for being rundown... I will concede it is not a new terminal in its first bloom of youth, and there has/is a lot of work going on at GVA at the moment. They have been working on the traffic ramps outside the terminal for the last couple of years, and they are currently rebuilding the C gates area as there are more and more longhaul flights leaving from GVA.

LGW last time I was in the north terminal really shocked me for the level of grim and filth...
I think "on a le temps" is only on your side of the Röstigraben...

"Run down" isn't a fair description of GVA; it's clean and everything works, but it's in a way like going back in time. However, airports of the 1980s didn't have to cope with security checks, wheeled hand luggage, and crowds generally.
