I have noticed that the AAA-BBB-CCC common flight number situation on international to domestic and vice versa itineraries frequently do credit as distinct flights and have both experienced it and read reports from others on FT conforming that.

However, as you say, on domestic itineraries the norm is a single set of TP's & Avios.
