I can't comment on the comparative merits of the other operators for First Class, but a word of warning if you're travelling at weekends on Virgin East Coast – you don't get a full menu, and if memory serves you don't get any alcoholic drinks either.

That aside, the carriages are spacious and comfortable (they've all been refurbished in the 12-18 months, I think).
