I don't understand why the IHG rep believes that using another email account would help in any way. You can log into an IHG account by using either the email address or the account number. Once someone has had access to your account he/she will know your account number (if he/she hasn't used that to begin with - randomly generating a 9 digit account number may be easier than retrieving email addresses from IHG members). Once the account number is known you can change your email address as many times as you want - it won't make any difference.
