The 1913 Law
The interesting thing is the old law that Romney is trying to use - a Massachusetts law from 1913 that says a Mass marriage is not valid if it wouldn't be valid in the state where the "marriagees" live. However Rhode Island (where I live, right on the border) has stated that there is nothing in the RI constitution that would make the marriage invalid. (Connecticut and New York have said the same thing). Romney seems to have turned a blind eye to this in his interpretation of this old law. The law was originally set up, embarassingly enough, to deal with states in which interracial marriages were not allowed - a twisted law being made to serve a new twisted purpose.
