There are people going Eu-NZ who would not be able to go landside at MEL/SYD due to passport/visa issues.
Agree, except probably low thousands flying between NZ & Europe daily rather than hundreds.

It is getting boarding passes more than 24 hours out that is sometimes an issue (depending on airline), not through checking bags.
