As I continue to do more research, I'm thinking an easier and also excellent way to do this is to just book an award flight on CX from BOS or JFK to HKG (we live in Boston so could just go home from St. Martin for a day). 1st class on CX from BOS/JFK to HKG looks like it would be awesome, even business would still be excellent. And then we just book paid flights from HKG to KUL for a very low price. My initial research here makes it seem like this option will be much easier to find/book than the initial QR route/option I was thinking, as outlined above.
