Why not just avoid the hassle and angst and depart from a US airport? Upstate New York means different things to different people. Ask someone in NYC and they'll tell you anything north of Manhattan is upstate. Assuming you are in extreme upstate like Plattsburgh, try Burlington or Albany. If Watertown, try Syracuse. If Buffalo, try Buffalo.
We are in Buffalo and the flights either mean a one hour layover which will not give me enough time to switch terminals and go through security with two small children or a six hour layover which does not sound pleasant either with the toddlers. So I thought maybe going across the border to have a direct flight might be easier or simpler.
