I believe your imagination has come true. OK, maybe not specifically against SQ, but most airlines reserve additional award inventory for its own members. For some airlines, BA comes to mind, they could even convert certain revenue inventory to award inventory for their own top-tier members. Most airlines also allows award waitlisting for its own members. Don't forget that different programs have different earning and redemption rates, different inventories should come as no surprise.
