That would be a BS excuse. Technology has been around for a LONG time now to have a human voice being able to say words that are dynamic. Programming it to simply have the ability to say "American Airlines Flight XXX at Gate YYY" is not difficult. The only excuse they can have is either apathy towards the quality or cheapness. Or, knowing AA, probably both.
Remember the geniuses at AA were the ones who came up with the welcome greeting "your flight crew of this flight is..." so don't expect them to excel at basic communications, let alone computerized messaging.
