Do you mean automated like the overheard voice at Phx that says "Mr Smith, you have a message waiting at the paging assistance location" type message?

They definitely use the pre-recorded voice for boarding at PHX. Just fly from PHX to PIT on Monday and they were using it at the next gate (which had 2 GAs). Interesting, everyone seemed to pay attention to it as passengers approached when their group was called. Our gate also had 2 GAs but every announcement was handled by one of them.

One of the GAs at the next gate must have hit the wrong button once - the recorded voice started its testing mode: "one, two, buckle my shoe...". That is as far as it got before they fixed the problem.
