Based upon preliminary feedback that I have received, it seems that AMEX is, indeed, disavowing prior knowledge of this.

However, after looking back at some old correspondence, I now recall that AMEX similarly claimed to have been gobsmacked by DL in 2014 when the AMEX card free guesting benefits for the Sky Club were done away with.
AMEX also hinted at that time that some sort of compensating benefit would be forthcoming before the 5/1/14 effective date of the benefit reduction, but nothing ever materialized.
And, of course, my fees for my AMEX cards were not accordingly decreased.
