For solo travelers, the bus is a good option (~100-200 yen). Go to the bus terminal and find the lines which stop at Canal City. I Googled "Canal City" to find its Japanese kanji/hiragana spelling and sorted it out from the other stops on the map above each gate.

Going back to Hakata station is even easier because the bus windshield display spells out Hakata in English.
