Why not? The fare is really for FNT-SFO. The connection is required and NW does not really care if you travel via DTW or MSP. Go ahead and try to switch. The worst that could happen is that they will say no. One issue though is because of Friday evening lots of flights are quite booked and you may find it difficult to get on.
