It does seem to be a pretty common issue! I'm actually surprised I never ran into it with my maiden name. I've had many passports over the years in my maiden name and they never added the space. I've also never had anyone else add it in either.

I thought maybe this was the reason they added the space on my passport, but the application was in all caps! Frustrating!
