You may need to show the card before going through immigration, but it isn't collected until you get to security (directly after immigration).

The train is $6, as is the dedicated T-Bus that runs between terminals. Hard call as to which is better - the train can be very crowded at peak times, but at the same times traffic around the airport can be bad. The bus is a little easier to get to (at least in terms of the number of elevators/escalators/etc you need to go up/down).
