Lyft says the tips are 100% passed through to the drivers. I would assume (hope?) Uber is the same, but I haven't seen it confirmed. That would be uberdouchey if they took juice out of the tips...
It's not legal for Management to take a share of employees' tips, but Uber maintains it's not an employer so those laws may not apply. Plus, even if they do apply, the company's business model is to break laws first and figure things out later. I was okay with that for a while, when it was primarily patronage laws they were breaking, but after various revelations a few months ago I stopped using Uber. I've used Lyft (and local alternatives, like RideAustin) exclusively since then though not sure how much better they truly are.
As for scary drivers: never had a bad one with Uber, did have one bad one with Lyft. Guy was in a rush and not paying enough attention; made a few wrong turns and hasty lane changes. Lyft responded to my feedback quickly though it's not clear they took any meaningful action, just guaranteed that *I* would never be paired with that driver again!
