Any airline starting up today would not choose or wish to have the organizational structure of BA. British Airways is stuck with a legacy organization that is in desperate need of a shake-up, otherwise it will fail. It's a market-wide phenomenon and watching Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, et al all slowly die as the likes of Primark steal their business is indeed very sad for folks like me who appreciate quality over price, but I am in the minority. I am not sure I agree with this analysis re. John Lewis or the idea that by going through this kind of change BA can transform itself into an organisation with a similar structure to a LCC or a Primark.
I think there is something to be said for the definite trend for hollowing out of the mid-market space in a lot of industries though (everything is becoming either premium or budget).
