That is the primary risk. He is saving 2.8k and, if his xMAN is delayed or cancelled, he has no protection and will need to purchase a new ticket LHR-US. Outbound, all he faces is purchasing a new LHR-MAN return (as both segments will be cancelled).
While he ought to be able to wend his way back to the US for well under $2.8k, it may well not be in J.
As a booking tip for others, if the fare can be found on AA, book that. AA, unlike BA and almost all other carriers, will rebook a transfer between two tickets BA-AA. BA will not.
