Yes he has a good 3 hours in each direction...i guess what is more more worrying is what happens if MAN - LHR is cancelled for exmaple? FLight back to US could end up being very costly to change!
it is a risk that needs to be considered when booking separate tickets. If he does not get to LHR in time for the flight to USA, he may be up for change fees and any fare difference to get back to the USA
