No idea if this is even possible, but next time you make a purchase at bricks and mortar location ask cashier if they can see the balance.
Some stores, at least in the US, are capable of partial authorization. That is, if the amount is more than what's left on the card, the issuer will still approve the transaction for the remaining amount. You can then provide another form of payment for the difference. I'm not sure I've ever seen stores that can look up how much exactly is on the card except if it's their own gift cards.
