Used to do the BOM Dom to International pretty regularly till a few years ago. The shuttle was fine enough with room for luggage in the hold and handbags and such inside the bus. Never had a worry besides delays.

But I am a man and Delhi is a different beast. The OP's wife's experience is very very unfortunate.
