Per Google Maps, Nana BTS is 450 meters from the JW. Phloen Chit is 400 meters, so pretty much a wash. The supposed dangerous highway entry/exit is on the other side of the road, so you won't have to deal with it if you're just walking up from the JW to the BTS entrance at Phloen Chit.
I really don't understand the sketchy bar area. Sketchy street food vendor, sure. Noxious air pollution under the highway? Most likely. Danger? Not really.
Based on your post, I also went to Google Maps and virtually walked the route via street scene, thinking maybe I forgot something. You turn left from the JW and there is the building with McD's. There are some restaurants in that building, but those are more sit down street food than trendy. Next, you pass a parking lot, the street vendors, the highway underpass with entrance on the other side, more vendors and the steps up to the BTS.
If there are bars/restaurants there, nor anything appearing upscale, I don't see it. Hopefully the poster will clue us in so that we can enjoy them.
BTW, if you are looking for the best walk from a Marriott property to the BTS, wouldn't that be the CY? If the rooms/bathrooms were a little nicer, it would be my go-to hotel. The CY is quite nice and the service is excellent.
