While the Ploenchit station may be closer, in order to get there from the JW you must cross the egress road of the highway which has no light or stop sign (so take your life into your own hands) and walk by one the skankiest bar areas located under the highway. Not even close to upscale !
Not far from the JW, but in a noticeably more upscale street is the Plaza Athenee on Wireless Road. Also a short walk to the BTS, and you won't pass any red light district or cross any dangerous streets on that walk.
