It's not an impossibility. I was on a JetBlue flight from LAS to LGB that was severely delayed. It was something like a 6 hour delay. Once it was determined that connecting passengers would miss the last onward flights, they were put on nonstop Southwest flights. I was shocked, but thoroughly impressed.

For the record, this was a few days before Christmas about 2 years ago.
