Yes, there is a limit to one pet/service animal in the first class cabin, and five in the main cabin. I've traveled with a pet and been upgraded before, but generally prefer to book or instant upgrade to first when traveling with the lil guy, just for the extra space for both of us.

You may not have been upgraded if there's another animal already in first, but it's pretty rare IME.
