The DMT is not really all that unusual. Most cities and states in the US, not to mention many countries, levy a 1% or so fee -- Alberta does 5% as it has not sales tax -- which goes to trourism promotion. In fact, it is a charge that most hotels and other travel industry companies encourage their governments to impose so they have a pot of money to market themselves with. I know it urks many people to pay fees and taxes when they visit a foreign country or other city in their own, but these are imposed so local people will not see their own taxes go up to promote one industry over another.
