is call them up and tell them I wanted the flight because of upgrades and type of aircraft. They changed me to the different routing (SAN - SFO - HNL instead of SAN - LAX - HNL) because of an aircraft change.

The best thing to do is call up and tell them your story. I don't think they would have a major issue with your request.
