Perhaps, ticketing in coach and then upfaring to first? Doesn't seem like it would work as the 2nd ticket would have a coupon value of $0.

It's not a hack. You can book any of the coach fare classes and use miles/status/GGU's to upgrade. You don't have to book the lowest coach fare. Assuming 2 x U space is available: if you have Gold/75K status, book an instant upgrade fare and you are both in F. Or book a miles or GGU upgradable fare and use miles/GGU's and again, you are in F. But you have to have the status, the miles or the GGU's for 2 upgrades, plus there has to be at least 2 U seats available as both parties must be upgraded at the same time.
