The "exclusivity" of this card is much more perception (and marketing) than reality.
A 700 credit score is also not particularly high. People probably have gotten plats with a lower score, but I bet they are in the minority. Amex closed his account so there is a chance he's drawing extra scrutiny and may need to be a cut above the rest to open high end cards.
